Dating back to at least 1696, this is one of Norwich's oldest pubs, on the historic TimberHill. Being able to trace the landlords back to 1841, with the premises trading as the Gardeners Arms, the pub got it's gruesome nickname of 'The Murderers' after events of 1895, when the landladies daughter 'Millie' was murdererd by her estranged husband Frank Miles, after he'd seen his wife walk into the pub, the evening before her death, with another man....Frank flew into a rage, and the next day, attacked Millie with a hammer. Frank was tried and convicted of murder, but pleaded he had been provoked, which appeared to have worked as his death sentence was commuted to life in prison...... and giving the pub the gruesome nick of 'The Murderers'
