Pirogovi park on nime saanud N. Pirogovi järgi, kes oli eksperimentaalkirurgia, topograafilise anatoomia ja välikirurgia rajaja. Tema tööde kaudu levis Tartu kirurgia kuulsus üle kogu Venemaa ja väljaspool Venemaad. Tartus õppinud ja professoriks saanud arstiteadlasele pühendatud monument valmis 1952. aastal.
