Die im 14. Jahrhundert erbaute Marienkirche ist nach dem Erfurter Dom die zweitgrößte Hallenkirche Thüringens und hat in der Stadtgeschichte Mühlhausens immer eine wesentliche Rolle gespielt. Die Kirche war die bevorzugte Begräbnisstätte der angesehensten Persönlichkeiten der Stadt. Hier wurde Fürstentag gehalten und 1525 predigte hier der radikale Reformator Thomas Müntzer. In ihren Hallen erklang zum ersten Mal die Ratswahlkantate von Johann Sebastian Bach.
