The castle at Swords was built by Archbishop of Dublin, John Comyn as his manorial residence around 1200. It was never a castle in the accepted sense but an episcopal palace. The curtain walls form an irregular polygon enclosing over an acre. Excavation of the chapel in the 1970s unearthed a 14th century tile pavement, part of which is on display in the National Museum of Ireland. Recent excavations uncovered burials that appear to predate the building of the gatehouse.
