大正末期から昭和初期に増改築された、当時には珍しい二世帯住宅です。建物は、床の間・違い棚・明かり障子・欄間からなる書院造り、数奇屋風の天井、下端部は石張りで上部は白漆喰塗りの土蔵などの伝統的な和風建築と、壁には大理石のマントルピース、寄木を用いたモザイク模様の床、ステンドグラスをはめ込んだ窓、ガラス製ペンダント照明を用いた、昭和初期独特の洋風建築が複合されています。池泉・築山・滝などを設けた典型的な書院庭園も国内外を問わず高く評価されています。 米国の日本庭園専門誌「Sukiya Living（数寄屋リビング）/ジャーナル・オブ・ジャパニーズ・ガーデニング」が実施した日本庭園のランキング最新調査の結果、山本亭の庭園が3位にランクインしました。
