詩人萩原朔太郎は口語自由詩を確立し、近代詩史に大きな足跡を残しました。他に平井晩村、高橋元吉、萩原恭次郎、伊藤信吉ほか多くの詩人を輩出した前橋は「近代詩のふるさと」と言われています。前橋文学館は、これら詩人たちの資料を展示し、特に朔太郎資料は原稿など全国一の質と量を有します。 また常設展のほか企画展が多く開かれ、前橋市が贈る萩原朔太郎賞の受賞者展も行っています。館周辺の広瀬川河畔緑道には多くの詩碑があり、格好の文学散歩コースとなっています。
