日本三名園の一つ、岡山後楽園は世界に誇る文化財。 岡山後楽園は、岡山藩主池田綱政公が家臣の津田永忠に命じて、貞享4年（1687）に着工、元禄13年（1700）には一応の完成をみました。その後も、藩主の好みで手を加えられましたが、江戸時代の姿を大きく変えることなく現在に伝えられてきました。 また、江戸時代の絵図や池田家の記録、文物が数多く残され、歴史的な変遷を知ることのできる、地方では稀な大名庭園となっています。 後楽園は、かつて藩主の静養の場、賓客接待の場として使われましたが、日を定めて藩内の人々にも観覧が許されていました。 明治17年（1884）に岡山県に護渡され、一般的公開されました。 昭和9年（1934）の水害、昭和20年の戦災では大きな被害を被りましたが、江戸時代の絵図に基づいて復旧をおこないました。 昭和27年には文化財保護法による「特別名勝」に指定され、後世に伝える歴史的文化遺産として維持管理にあたっています。
