ここ岡本太郎記念館は、1996年、84歳で亡くなるまで、岡本太郎のアトリエ兼住居だった。1954年から40年以上彼が生活した空間である。
絵を描き、原稿を口述し、彫刻と格闘し、人と会い、万国博の太陽の塔をはじめ巨大なモニュメントや壁画など、あらゆる作品の構想を練り、制作した場所。
彼のエネルギーが今も満ち満ちている。
更に言えば、ここは戦前は青山高樹町三番地。
岡本一平・かの子・太郎の一家が永く暮らし、一家でヨーロッパへ旅立ったのもこの地からだ。旧居は戦災で焼失した。
戦後、友人の坂倉準三の設計でアトリエを建てた。
ル・コルビュジェの愛弟子だった坂倉は太郎の求めに応じ、ブロックを積んだ壁の上に凸レンズ形の屋根をのせてユニークな建物を作った。当時話題をよんだ名建築だ。
岡本太郎の作品は一人の人間の枠を超えて多彩にひろがる。そのすべてがここから閃き出た。膨大なデッサンやエスキース、彫刻、また戦後文化のうねりを伝える資料の山。
これから折々に整理して、お目にかけたい。
