成立於民國59年3月1日，當初並未有正名館舍，臨時設在中壢市青年育樂中心一樓；民國72年遷至中美路76號，位於中正公園內，為一棟四層樓之圖書館大樓，民國87年11月一、二樓租給中壢市衛生所使用，本館遷至市公所一樓（中壢市環北路380號），原址(中美路76號)3樓仍為溫書室，該溫書室於97年8月23日封閉使用。
考量讀者仍有溫書需求，另外成立中華溫書室， 地址為中華路二段369-1號4樓（泰豐輪胎公司旁，並已於97年7月8日正式啟用）。
民國98年1月19日拆除舊圖書館建物，新館於99年1月28日正式落成啟用。
因本縣於103年12月25日正式升格為直轄市，本館自即日起更名為「桃園市立圖書館中壢分館」。
服務空間
一樓為期刊閱覽區、報紙閱覽區、上網區及兒童閱覽室，
二樓為圖書閱覽區(書庫)、英文閱讀分級圖書特色館藏區，
三樓為書庫及藝文展覽區，
地下一樓為自修室。
