Merridee McCray, the founder of Merridee’s Breadbasket, grew up baking breads, pies and sweets from scratch with her mother. When Merridee passed away in 1993, Jim Kreider bought Merridee’s Breadbasket. Carter House was built in 1830 and originally owned by Fountain Branch Carter. During the Battle of Franklin, Carter House was used as a U.S. Army headquarters. The Carter family, a neighboring family, and several enslaved people sheltered in the cellar during the horrific combat. Visitors learn the story of the family, the battle, and how the Civil War redefined America.
