Venue description

Mary Washington died in August 1789. Her daughter, Betty Lewis, had her buried near a large sandstone outcropping now called Meditation Rock behind the monument. The exact location of her grave is unknown. Construction of the first monument began in the 1830s but was never completed. It remained unassembled until 1889 when the property was advertised for public auction. Galvanized by outraged citizens, a group of local women formed the Mary Washington Monument Association of Fredericksburg to save the site. A similar group in Washington, DC, established the National Mary Washington Memorial Association. These groups raised money to create the current monument, dedicated on May 10, 1894. The site is owned by Washington Heritage Museums.
