日本三名城の一つに数えられる熊本城を築いた加藤清正（かとうきよまさ）は、現在も清正公（せいしょこ）さんとして熊本市民に親しまれ、人々の崇敬を集めています。そんな彼の功績をたたえた像が熊本城のそばと廟のある本妙寺（ほんみょうじ）の2か所に建てられ、いつも熊本を見守ってくれています。熊本城のそばの清正公像は甲冑（かっちゅう）と長烏帽子（ながえぼし）姿で、自らが築いた戦国の要塞熊本城を背に、戦いの陣中に座るような姿で、まさに熊本を守らんとしているかのようです。天正十六年（1588）肥後北半国の領主として隈本城に入り、関ヶ原の戦い後、肥後五十四万石の大名となった加藤清正。この間、熊本城の築城に着手し、慶長十二年（1607）完成させたといわれ、隈本を熊本と改名しました。土木・治水工事をはじめ、城下町の形成に力を注ぎ、現在の熊本市発展の基礎を築きました。周辺には、演劇やコンサートなどが行われる市民会館や熊本を訪れている外国との人々の交流拠点である国際交流会館があり、銅像の背後にのびる行幸坂（みゆきざか）は熊本城内へと続いています。
