熊本藩主初代細川忠利公（1586-1641）が鷹狩の際に、渾々と清水が湧くこの地を気に入り、御茶屋として整備されたのが始まりといわれる「水前寺成趣園」。後に、熊本藩3代藩主・綱利公（1643-1714）の代に大規模な作庭がなされ、現在の規模の庭園が完成。5世紀東晋の時代の詩人・陶淵明の詩（帰去来辞）より「成趣園」と命名されました。華やかな元禄時代には東屋も沢山あり、成趣園十景を選んで楽しまれました。肥後国熊本藩6代藩主・重賢公（1720-1785）の時代に建物は酔月亭一つを残して撤去され、樹木も松だけの質素なものとなりました。 園内の池からは清冽な伏流水が湧き出し、見事な和風庭園が広がります。水前寺成趣園の池は阿蘇の伏流水から造られ、湧水は、1年中約18度の水温に保たれています。池を囲む松の佇まいはどっしりとしていて、上品な風情が庭園をより美しくしています。鴨の群れや白鷺が優雅に泳ぎ、ゆったりした気持ちにさせてくれます。雨の日は、いつも以上に静けさを感じ、池の美しさに吸い込まれていくようです。熊本市という大都市の中にあることを忘れてしまいそうなほど、穏やかな空間が広がります。歌人...
