慶長年間、黒田長政が福岡城を建築する時、博多湾の入江であったこの地を外濠として利用、昭和2年ここで開かれた東亜勧業博覧会を機に造園工事を行ない、昭和4年県営大濠公園として開園したものです。 大濠公園は福岡市のほぼ中央に位置し、総面積が約39万8千平方メートルあり、うち約22万6千平方メートルの池を有した、全国有数の水景公園です。 公園内には、池の周辺約2キロメートルの周遊道、野鳥の森、児童遊園、能楽堂、日本庭園、および4つの橋で結ばれた中の島や浮見堂、ボートハウス等を配し休養、娯楽や体育の向上に利用されています。

天神中央公園は旧福岡県庁跡地に、広大な芝生広場や国指定重要文化財「貴賓館」などを有する都市公園として、平成元年3月に誕生しました。 大正4年に建設された旧福岡県庁舎は、県の行政需要の増大により手狭となったこと、庁舎の老朽化が進んだことを理由に、昭和52年7月の県議会で東公園への移転が決定。これにより東公園が大幅に縮小されるため、この県庁跡地を代替公園の一つとして整備することになりました。総面積は約3万1000平方メートル。福岡市の中心部に位置し、自然豊かな緑地空間が県民の癒しの場になっているとともに、非常災害時における緊急避難場所として機能することも目的としています。 また、2019年8月には西中洲エリアに飲食施設「HARENO GARDEN EAST&WEST」がオープン。新たな憩いのスポットとして賑わっています。
