二条城は1603年（慶長8年）、江戸幕府初代将軍徳川家康が、天皇の住む京都御所の守護と将軍上洛時の宿泊所として築城した城である。3代将軍家光の時代、後水尾天皇行幸のため城内は大規模な改修が行われ、二の丸御殿には狩野探幽の障壁画などが加えられた。1867年（慶応3年）、15代将軍慶喜が二の丸御殿の大広間で大政奉還の意思を表明したことは有名である。1994年（平成6年）にはユネスコ世界遺産に登録されている。 Nijp-jo castle has witnessed some of the most important events in Japanese history since it has been built. The castle was completed in 1603 on the orders of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Shogun of the Tokugawa Shognate(1603-1867).
