조선시대 궁궐 중 가장 중심이 되는 왕조 제일의 법궁(法宮, 임금이 사는 궁궐)으로 태조 4년(1395)에 한양으로 수도를 옮긴 후 처음으로 세운 궁궐이다. 궁궐의 이름은 정도전이 『시경』에 나오는 “이미 술에 취하고 이미 덕에 배부르니 군자만년 그대의 큰 복을 도우리라”에서 큰 복을 빈다는 뜻의 ‘경복(景福)’이라는 두 글자를 따서 지은 것이다. 1412년 태종은 경복궁의 연못을 크게 넓히고 섬 위에 경회루를 만들었다. 이 곳에서 임금과 신하가 모여 잔치를 하거나 외국에서 오는 사신들에게 연회를 베풀었다.태종의 뒤를 이은 세종은 주로 경복궁에서 지냈는데, 경회루 남측의 궐내각사 권역에 집현전을 짓고 학자들을 가까이 하였다. 또한 경회루의 남쪽에는 시각을 알려주는 보루각을 세웠으며, 궁궐의 서북쪽 모퉁이에는 천문 관측시설인 간의대를 마련해 두었다. 또한 흠경각을 짓고 그 안에 시각과 4계절을 나타내는 옥루기륜을 설치하기도 하였다.
