Mary Washington died in August 1789. Her daughter, Betty Lewis, had her buried near a large sandstone outcropping now called Meditation Rock behind the monument. The exact location of her grave is unknown. Construction of the first monument began in the 1830s but was never completed. It remained unassembled until 1889 when the property was advertised for public auction.
