Cooper Triangle, as with The Cooper Union next door, is named for industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper. The centerpiece of the triangle is a monument to Cooper created by two of the 19th century's most famous figures, sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens and architect Stanford White.
