慶長年間、黒田長政が福岡城を建築する時、博多湾の入江であったこの地を外濠として利用、昭和2年ここで開かれた東亜勧業博覧会を機に造園工事を行ない、昭和4年県営大濠公園として開園したものです。
大濠公園は福岡市のほぼ中央に位置し、総面積が約39万8千平方メートルあり、うち約22万6千平方メートルの池を有した、全国有数の水景公園です。
公園内には、池の周辺約2キロメートルの周遊道、野鳥の森、児童遊園、能楽堂、日本庭園、および4つの橋で結ばれた中の島や浮見堂、ボートハウス等を配し休養、娯楽や体育の向上に利用されています。
