Best time of day to visit

Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of Inari worship, dedicated to the Shinto deity of rice and prosperity. It is famous for the Senbon Torii, the thousands of vermilion gates along the trails up Mount Inari. The grounds are open 24 hours a day.

Every day follows the same rhythm. The shrine is at 10% at 6 AM and 20% at 7 AM on weekdays. Then it fills fast. On Wednesday, busyness climbs from 40% at 8 AM to 85% at 11 AM. On Saturday it goes from 50% at 8 AM to 95% at 10 AM.

The late morning is the peak on every day. It holds through the early afternoon. On Friday the shrine stays at 85% from 11 AM to 2 PM. On Monday it sits at 90% from 11 AM to 1 PM.

The evening eases off steadily. By 6 PM busyness falls to 30% to 40%. Between 8 PM and 10 PM it is at 10% to 20% on every day. From 12 AM it is at 5% through the night on every day.

The quietest daytime choice is the early morning. A 6 AM start gives you the gates at 10% and time to climb before 9 AM, when Monday is already at 65%. The summit loop takes 2 to 3 hours round trip. Shops and offices on the grounds are staffed only during the day, roughly 9 AM to 5 PM.

An evening visit is also calm. Keep in mind that the lower trails are lit at night, but much of the upper loop is not.
