Yes, you can check how busy a bar or nightclub will be before you leave home. BestTime's free city guides show an hourly busyness forecast for bars and clubs in cities around the world. Pick a city, set the day and time, and filter on busy or quiet: for example, busy bars in New York City on Friday night.

This guide shows you how to read those forecasts, how to find a lively bar or a quiet one, and, if you build apps, how to get the same data from the API.

When are bars and clubs busiest?

Every bar has its own rhythm, but most follow a similar week:

  • Friday and Saturday nights are the peak. Most bars hit their busiest hour of the week between about 9 PM and midnight on these two nights.
  • Thursday is often the busiest weeknight. It can look like a smaller version of Friday.
  • Monday to Wednesday are quieter. Many bars stay well below their weekend peak.
  • Nightclubs peak later. Clubs usually fill up after 11 PM and stay busy well past midnight.
  • Early evening is calm. Between 5 PM and 8 PM most bars are filling up, not full.

These are rules of thumb. A rooftop bar, a sports bar and a cocktail bar on the same street can peak at very different hours. That is why it helps to check the forecast for the venue itself.

Find busy bars with the free city guide

The city guides at besttime.app/app list bars, nightclubs, restaurants, cafes and sightseeing spots per city, with a week heatmap for each venue. You do not need an account to use them.

  1. Open the guide for your city and category. The URL pattern is /app/<Country>/<City>/<category>, for example /app/United-States/New-York-City/bar. Use nightclub instead of bar for clubs.
  2. Set the day. Choose the night you plan to go out.
  3. Set the time. "Night" covers 9 PM to 3 AM. "Evening" covers 6 PM to 11 PM.
  4. Set the busyness. "Busy" shows venues forecast at 70% or more during the chosen hours. "Quiet" shows venues under 30% that are open.
  5. Scroll the list and open the map to see where the busy bars are.

You can also set the filters in the URL:

Filter Values Example
day monday to sunday ?day=friday
time morning, afternoon, evening, night &time=night
busy quiet, normal, busy &busy=busy

So /app/United-States/New-York-City/bar?day=friday&time=night&busy=busy lists the bars in New York City that are forecast to be busy on Friday night.

How to read a bar's week heatmap

Each venue card has a heatmap with one row per day and one column per hour. The colors run from green (not busy) through yellow (usually a little busy) to red (as busy as it gets).

Week heatmap for 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar with red cells on Friday and Saturday nights 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar: green on early weeknights, red on Friday and Saturday between roughly 9 PM and 11 PM.

Here is what this heatmap tells you about 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar:

  • The peak is Saturday night, with Friday close behind. Both turn red from around 9 PM.
  • Weeknights stay yellow. Monday to Thursday the bar is moderately busy in the evening but never at its peak.
  • Late afternoon is quiet every day. Around 5 PM the cells are green, so that is the time for a calm drink with a view.
  • Saturday and Sunday open earlier, which shows up as extra cells on the left.

Read any bar the same way. Look for the red cells to find the crowd, and the green cells to avoid it.

Find a quiet bar instead

Not everyone wants a packed room. If you want a quiet place to talk, flip the filter:

  • Set busy=quiet to list bars under 30% at the chosen time, for example quiet bars in New York City on Friday evening.
  • Go earlier. A bar that is red at 11 PM is often green at 6 PM.
  • Go midweek. The same bar on a Tuesday can be half as busy as on a Saturday.
  • Use busy=normal (30% to 70%) if you want some atmosphere without a crowd.

What the busyness score means

BestTime forecasts how busy a venue is for each hour of the week on a scale from 0 to 100. The forecasts are built from anonymized, aggregated phone location data combined with other real-world signals such as weather, events and holidays.

Keep three things in mind:

  • 100 is the venue's own busiest hour of the week. It is not a share of capacity. A small bar at 100 can still have fewer people than a big club at 60.
  • It is not a head count. BestTime does not return visitor numbers.
  • It is a forecast. It describes a typical week. A one-off party, a game on TV or a private event can make a night busier or quieter than usual.

Read more about the scale in how venue busyness forecasts work.

For developers: busy bars from the API

If you build a nightlife app, a city guide or a chatbot, you can get the same forecasts from the BestTime API. The city guides run on it.

The Venue Filter endpoint returns venues in an area that match a day, an hour range and a busyness range. This call asks for bars within 2 km of Lower Manhattan that are at least 70% busy somewhere between 9 PM and 11 PM on Friday:

curl -G "https://besttime.app/api/v1/venues/filter" \
  --data-urlencode "api_key_private=YOUR_PRIVATE_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "types=BAR" \
  --data-urlencode "day_int=4" \
  --data-urlencode "hour_min=21" \
  --data-urlencode "hour_max=23" \
  --data-urlencode "busy_min=70" \
  --data-urlencode "lat=40.722" \
  --data-urlencode "lng=-73.995" \
  --data-urlencode "radius=2000" \
  --data-urlencode "limit=20"

A few notes:

  • day_int runs from 0 (Monday) to 6 (Sunday), so Friday is 4.
  • The BestTime day runs from 6 AM to 5 AM the next morning. A Friday night that goes past midnight still belongs to Friday.
  • By default a venue matches if any hour in the range reaches busy_min. Add busy_conf=all to require every hour in the range to be that busy.
  • Each venue in the response includes venue_name, venue_address, venue_lat, venue_lng, day_raw (the hourly scores for the filtered hours), venue_dwell_time_min and venue_dwell_time_max.
  • The Venue Filter costs 1 credit per 10 venues.

To add bars that are not in the results yet, use Venue Search with a query such as "cocktail bars in Lower Manhattan", or forecast a single bar by name and address. A new forecast by name and address costs 2 credits, and a refresh or query by venue ID costs 1 credit.

The full walkthrough, with code and the response format, is in the Venue Filter API tutorial. All parameters are in the API documentation.

Tips for a better night out

  • Plan the order of your night. Start at a bar that peaks early and move to one that peaks late.
  • Check the closing pattern. Cells that turn green after midnight often mean the bar empties out or closes.
  • Compare two or three options. If your first pick is red, the next bar on the list may be just as good and easier to get into.
  • Look at the whole week. If you are free on Thursday, the same bar may give you a lively room without the Saturday queue.

Questions

Is there an app to see if a bar or club is busy?

Yes. BestTime's free city guides show an hourly busyness forecast for bars and nightclubs in cities around the world. You can filter on day, time of night and busy or quiet, without an account.

What is the best time to go to a bar?

For a full room, most bars are busiest on Friday and Saturday between about 9 PM and midnight. For a quiet drink, go early in the evening or pick a Monday to Wednesday. Check the forecast for the bar itself, because every venue has its own pattern.

How can I find busy bars tonight?

Open the city guide for bars in your city, set the day to today, the time to night and the filter to busy. The list shows bars that are forecast to be at least 70% busy during those hours.

Does the busyness percentage show how many people are in the bar?

No. The 0-100 score is relative to that bar's own busiest hour of the week. 100 means as busy as it usually gets. It is not a head count and not a share of capacity.
